Monument to Gregory XIII

• Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585) is the namesake for the Gregorian Calendar which is still, worldwide, the most used calendar today. The relief recalls February 24, 1582 when papal astronomers shared their revision of the Julian calendar with Pope Gregory XIII. He approved it and the new calendar went into effect from October 4-15, 1582
• Gregory XIII was of the Buoncompagni family whose coat of arms includes the winged dragon which is at center
