• St. Lawrence (225-258) was a deacon in Rome that was martyred under the Valerian (253-259) persecution

• This is one of the five patriarchal basilicas of Rome

• The campanile is Romanesque style and was built in 1150

• The portico architecture and design is by Vassalletto in 1220
