Anchor 1 ▼ Atrium Artist: Giuseppe Obici Date: 1800s • The St. Paul statue portrays him with a sword because it was the instrument through which he was beheaded. Although condemned for being Christian, Paul was entitled to this type of death because he was a Roman citizen. The inscription reads: " To the preacher of truth, the teacher of nations" • The columns in front of the facade are red Baveno granite. A head of St. Paul is carved into the top of the columns

Anchor 1 ▼ St. Petronilla Artist: Guercino Date: Mosaic copy • This is Burial of St. Petronilla. The original painting is in the Capitoline Museum in Rome • The relics of St. Petronilla (200s) were moved from the catacombs of Domitilla to old St. Peter's during the reign of Pope Paul I (757-767). They were then transferred to the new St. Peter's in 1606 • The cupola mosaic is Heavenly Militia • The pendentives, from top left clockwise, are church fathers who have written on angels including Dionysius the Areopagite, Flavian of Constantinople, St. Leo the Great, and St. Bernard ◀ ▶

Anchor 1 Baldachin Artist: Arnolfo di Cambio Date: 1285 • The corner statue is St. Paul with sword • The center inscription notes that the work was commissioned by the Benedictine abbot Bartholomew in 1285 • Above St. Paul is the inscription, "Arnolfo did this work", which is continued above St. Peter, on the opposite side, "with his assistant Pietro." This assistant is likely Pietro di Oderisio • To the right of St. Paul, a smaller St. Paul receives the baldachin from the abbot Bartholomew on the other side of the arch ▶ ◀ ▼

Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ ◀ St. Veronica Relic Artist: Bernini Date: 1627 ca. • Each of the four piers are dedicated to an important relic that is housed in the balcony area above each statue. The decorations were designed by Bernini for Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644). Thus Urban's VIII's coat of arms is at the base. The spiral columns are from the altar of old St. Peter's • The relic for this pier is the veil of St. Veronica. The veil is recorded to have been in old St. Peter's around the year 1000. According to the story, St. Veronica miraculously had the imprint of Jesus' face remain on her veil during the passion of Jesus
