Borghese Chapel

Artist: Flaminio Ponzio

Date: 1605

 

• The chapel is named after Borghese Pope Paul V (1605-1621) who wished to honor the Salus Populi Romani icon placed here in 1613. In medieval times this icon was thought to have been painted by St. Luke, the gospel writer, but it is now dated to the 9th or 12th centuries

 

• Ponzio followed the designs of the Sistine Chapel opposite that Fontana had used

• The main altar has columns of Oriental jasper
