Capranica Chapel

• This chapel was established by the Capranica family in 1449. The tomb of St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) was kept here from 1430-1855. After the historical Battle of Lepanto in 1571,  Angelo Capranica, a descendant of the family and member of the Confraternity of the Rosary, had Marcello Venusti decorate the ceiling with the Mysteries of the Rosary in 1573. A few years later in 1579, the chapel itself was dedicated to the Madonna of the Rosary. Giovanni de' Vecchi added the Stories of St. Catherine of Siena in 1586. The tomb of St. Catherine of Siena was moved to the main altar in 1855 where she still lies today
