Christ the Risen Redeemer

Date: 1519-1521
• Commissioned by Bernardo Cencio, Mario Scappucci, Pietro Castellano, and Metello Vari this second version was created after a black vein was found in the first version. Michelangelo worked on it in Florence and then sent it to his apprentice Pietro Urbano in Rome. After Urbano damaged the work, Federico Frizzi finished the statue
• The loin cloth was a later addition as Christ's sexual organs were visible in order to express his victory over lust and death
• Sebastiano del Piombo said of this work that "the knees alone were worthy of more than the whole Rome"
