Second Courtyard

• This courtyard was originally part of the interior of Pope Leo IV's (847-855) church. After damage in the sack of Rome by the Normans (1084), Pope Paschal II (1099-1118) reconstructed it as a smaller church in 1111

• The entrance to the second courtyard is the location of the original entrance to Pope Leo IV's church

• The decorations in the portico and the 5 pillars in the right wall were part of Pope Leo IV's church
