Monument to Matilda

• The tomb is Monument to Matilda. Matilda (1046-1115) was countess of Tuscany. She holds the papal tiara because she was a defender of the papacy
• Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) commissioned the tomb and had Matilda's remains moved here from a Benedictine monastery in Polirone in 1635. She was the first woman buried in St. Peter's
