Transfiguration

• Raphael's original painting was first displayed in S. Pietro in Montorio a church in the Trastevere area of Rome. After Napoleon conquered Rome, he had the painting moved to the Louvre in France. Later, after the fall of Napolean, the painting was returned to the Vatican Pinacoteca where it remains today
• Raphael's approach is unique as he combines the episodes of the transfiguration (above) and the healing the a possessed boy (below). Above, Elijah and Moses are on each side of Jesus while Peter, James, and John hide underneath
