Apse Mosaic
Artist: Byzantine influence of tall figures
Date: 9th century
• Jesus in the center gives a blessing in the Greek manner
• Above Jesus, God the Father's hand holds a crown
• Right of Jesus are Sts. Peter, Valerian, and Agatha
• Left of Jesus are Sts. Paul, Cecilia, and Pope Paschal. The square halo of Paschal indictates he was still alive. He is holding a model of this church
• A pheonix, indicating the resurrection, sits on one of the palm trees
• Twelve lambs depart Jerusalem and Bethlehem towards the Lamb of God
Inscription recalls Paschal's building of the Church and placing the sarcophagi in the crypt
