Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas

Artist: Pirro Ligorio, Giacomo and Tommaso Cassignola

Date: 1566

• This is the Funeral Monument of Paul IV. Pope Paul IV was Giampietro Carafa the nephew of Oliviero Carafa the patron of the chapel. Oliviero was to be buried in the funeral cella but was instead buried in Naples

• Giorgio Vasari relates that Lippi's fresco on the struggle of virtue and vice was destroyed to make room for this monument

• The columns on the sides of the tomb are verde antico

• Two reclining statues that were part of this monument can be found near St. Catherine of Siena's Room through the Sacristy
