• As the story goes, Processus and Martinian were guards during the imprisonment of Peter and Paul in the Mamertine. They were both converted to Christianity and later martyred.

 

• In the 9th century the relics of St. Processus and St. Martinian were moved to old St. Peter's and are now under this altar
