Anchor 1 ▼ Chapel of the Relics of the Passion • This relic is the INRI inscription written by Pontius Pilate and placed on the cross of Jesus. INRI are the first letters from the Latin: Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus the Nazarene King of the Jews). It is referred to in the gospels: Jn 19:19, Mt 27:37, Mk 15:26, and Lk 23:38 • The inscription reads in Latin: I NAZARENUS RE; Greek: IC NAZAPENOUCI; Hebrew: JSHW-NZR-MM. It measures 25 cm x 14 cm x 4 mm. ▲ ◀

According to the story, St. Veronica miraculously had the imprint of Jesus' face remain on her veil during the passion of Jesus • Each of the four piers are dedicated to an important relic that is housed in the balcony area above each statue. The statues are all 16 feet 6 inches high. The relic for this pier is the veil of St. Veronica. The veil is recorded to have been in old St. Peter's around the year 1000
