Anchor 1 ▶ ◀ Easter Candlestick Artist: Nicolaus de Angelo; Petro Bassaletto Date: 1170 • The scenes on the candlestick are of Jesus' suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension as well as of various animals. Jesus is clothed in a tunic which was an iconographic tradition that was falling out of favor at the time • The base and top may have been reused from an older candlestick. It is about 18 feet in height • At the base the inscription reads: "I Nicolaus de Angelo with Petro Bassaletto produced this work." ▼

Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ ▶ ◀ Chapel of the Holy Founders Artist: Ludovico Mazzanti Date: 17th • The painting over the main altar is The Virgin with the Saints: Ignatius Loyola, Aloysius Gonzaga, and Francis Borgia • St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) was the primary founder of the Society of Jesus • St. Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591) was fellow Jesuit novice with St. Stanislaus. They were canonized saints together in 1726 • St. Francis Borgia (1510-1572) was a Jesuit general responsible for the novitiate located here

The base relief refers to the right of offering gifts to the pope. The specific event here is a canonization ceremony on October 16, 1690

Anchor 1 S. Andrea al Quirinale Original church: 1566 Current church: 1670 • The original church and novitiate run by the Jesuits was also dedicated to St. Andrew. When the Jesuits asked Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667) to replace the original church he encouraged them to use his architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini • Bernini's son Domenico once found him alone in this church and his response was: "I feel a special satisfaction deep in my heart for this one work of architecture and I often come here to console myself" • The benefactor for the church was Prince Camillo Pamphili (1622-1666) who was the nephew of Pope Innocent X (1644-1655) Facade • The coat of arms at the top of the two columns is that of the Pamphili family • After the death of the benefactor for the church Prince Camillo Pamphili, his son Prince Giovanni Battista become the benefactor for the facade

Anchor 1 Baldachin Artist: Arnolfo di Cambio Date: 1285 • The corner statue on the right is the Benedictine abbot Bartholomew who commissioned the baldachin. The right statue has sometimes been identified as St. Benedict, founder of the Benedictine order. The statue on the left is St. Peter with keys • To the left of abbot Bartholomew is Able whose offering was accepted by God in Genesis • To the right of St. Peter is Cain whose offering was rejected by God in Genesis ▶ ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb of Charles Emmanuel IV • Charles Emmanuel IV was the king of Sardinia from 1796-1802. After his wife's death, he abdicated the throne in 1802 and entered the Jesuit novitiate here in 1815. He died a few years later on October 5th, 1819
