Anchor 1 Second Courtyard • This courtyard was originally part of the interior of Pope Leo IV's (847-855) church. After damage in the sack of Rome by the Normans (1084), Pope Paschal II (1099-1118) reconstructed it as a smaller church in 1111 • The entrance to the second courtyard is the location of the original entrance to Pope Leo IV's church • The decorations in the portico and the 5 pillars in the right wall were part of Pope Leo IV's church ▶ ◀ ▼

Anchor 1 ▶ Presbytery and Choir Artist: Giuseppe Fontana, Francesco Retrosi, Camillo Ceccarini, Francesco Podesti Date: ca. 1857 • The main altar was designed by Fontana in the neo-Gothic style. Podesti painted the Four Cardinal Virtues and the Heads of Angels on the front of the altar • The patron Alessandro de' Medici had the Gothic choir altered in 1536-1540 by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane to create space for the two tombs of the Medici Popes. In the 1600s the choir was again altered by Giovanni Fontana and then Carlo Maderno. These Baroque additions were later removed in the 1848-1855 with the neo-Gothic renovation ▼

Anchor 1 ▼ St. Andrew Artist: Francois Duquesnoy Date: 1633-1639 • The statue is St. Andrew. St. Andrew, the apostle of Jesus, is here receiving the cross he will be martyred on • Each of the four piers are dedicated to an important relic that is housed in the balcony area above each statue. The statues are all 16 feet 6 inches high. The relic for this pier is the head of St. Andrew. The head was given to Pope Pius II (1448-1464) by Thomas Paleologos in 1462. However, Pope Paul VI (1963-1978) returned it to the Greek Church in 1964

Anchor 1 Portico • The inscription above the arches notes the completion of the doorways was in the fourteenth year of the reign of Pope Paul V (1605-1621). Thus 1619. The portico itself had been completed in 1612 • Under the central three arches of the entryway can be seen lists with the names of clergy that were present for the declaration of Mary's Assumption into Heaven by Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) on November 1, 1950 ▲ ▶ ◀
