Anchor 1 ▶ ◀ Tomb of Innocent VIII Artist: Antonio del Pollaiolo Date: 1498 • Above, Pope Innocent VIII (1484-1492) has in his left hand a piece of Longinus's lance. Longinus is the traditional name of the soldier, from John 19:34, that pierces the side of Jesus on the cross. Sultan Bajazet II gave this to Innocent VIII in 1489. The four panels around the Pope indicate the four cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude. Anchor 1 ▲ ▶ St. Helena Artist: Andrea Bolgi Date: 1630-1639 • The statue is St. Helena. St. Helena was the mother of Constantine who legalized Christianity in 313. St. Helena traveled to Jerusalem in order to find the cross that Jesus was crucified on • Each of the four piers are dedicated to an important relic that is housed in the balcony area above each statue. The statues are all 16 feet 6 inches high. The relic for this pier is the true cross of St. Helena. The piece of the cross was given to St. Peter's by Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) ▼

Anchor 1 Gregorian Portico • As part of the rebuilding project after the fire, Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846) asked the main architect Luigi Poletti to make a portico. It was thus named after Gregory • The 12 columns used in the design were part of the original basilica before the fire. One of the columns has an inscription from the original consecration in 390 by Pope Siricius • Poletti also designed the campanile which was based on a Roman tomb found in France.
