Anchor 1 ▲ ▶ ◀ Albani Chapel Artist: Carlo Fontana Date: 1706-1712 • Pope Clement XI (1700-1721) built this as a funeral chapel for his family (Albani) and dedicated it to Pope St. Fabian (236-250) who was martyred in the persecution of Decius (249-251). Excavations in 1915 are believed to have found St. Fabian's body under the ground near the center of the main church. A reliquary behind the altar contains his head • At one time this church was dedicated to St. Fabian as well as to St. Sebastian. When the new St. Peter's was finished, the crucifix was placed in the Pieta chapel until it was moved here in 1749 when Michelanglo's famous statue was completed
