Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb of Innocent VIII Artist: Antonio del Pollaiolo Date: 1498 • Above, Pope Innocent VIII (1484-1492) has in his left hand a piece of Longinus's lance. Longinus is the traditional name of the soldier, from John 19:34, that pierces the side of Jesus on the cross. Sultan Bajazet II gave this to Innocent VIII in 1489. The four panels around the Pope indicate the four cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude.
