The dual pairs of fluted red and white cottanello columns support an architrave that bends with the church • The carrara marble pilasters form eight chapels. These chapels were designed by Mattia De Rossi who was an assistant to Bernini • The Corinthian columns have the Pampili dove with an olive branch sitting on them • The arches opening to the side altars are cottanello marble with Sicilian jasper friezes and spandrels

This church is built on top of that soil. Thus the name of this church: Holy Cross in Jerusalem Artist: Domenico Gregorini; Pietro Passalacqua Date: 1744 • The facade inscription reads: Pope Benedict XIV, in Honor of the Holy Cross, in the Fourth Year of His Pontificate • The statues, from left to right are: St. Helen, St. Luke, St. Matthew, two angels, St. John, St. Mark, Constantine • The campanile is from around 1144

Anchor 1 ▼ Facade Artist: Ferdinando Fuga Date: 1741-1742 • The facade of Fuga covers that of Pope Eugenius III (1145-1153) • The statue at the lower left is St. Charles Borromeo (1538-1584). At top, from the left are two Popes, Mary and Jesus, and two other Popes. The statue at the lower right is Nicholas Albergati (1375-1443). Over the center door are statues of Humility and Virginity. Pope Benedict XIV's (1740-1758) coat of arms is just below them • The Romanesque campanile dates from 1377 with a bell from 1289. At 248 feet, it is the tallest in Rome. The coat of arms is of Pope Paul V (1605-1621) who renovated it ▶ ◀
