Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ ▶ ◀ Back • The six columns in the back are of Oriental alabaster. After the fire, Mohammed Ali, Khedive of Egypt, gave them to Gregory XVI in 1843. Because the columns are of such a soft stone, they cannot bear much weight and the architects gave them a largely decorative function. The gift is significant as it signals Egypt's desire to play a larger role in the international stage • The coat of arms held by angels is of Pope Pius IX. It was carved by Giosue Meli with angels by Ignazio Iacometti

Anchor 1 ▼ Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas Artist: Filippino Lippi Date: 1489-1492 • The fresco is Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas over Heresy St. Thomas holds the Bible which says "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise." At his feet, the man with a book on him, represents heresy and holds the banner "Wisdom defeats wickedness." The women from the left, represent philosophy, theology, dialectics, and grammar • Various heretics are in front including Mani, Eutyches, Sabellius, Arius. Their works are about to be burned. The Dominican at right is Gioacchino Torriani or Valentino da Camerino. The Medici's who became Popes Leo X and Clement VII are also present as well as Niccolo di Pitigliano who led the papal army • The Lateran basilica is in the left background with Marcus Aurelius statue ▲ ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ Confession Artist: Carlo Maderno; Martino Ferrabosco Date: 1613 • In the confession, the tomb of St. Peter, the apostle of Jesus, can be viewed • The wall has the Niche of the Pallia. Pallia are vestments given by the pope to new archbishops. Also above the tomb is a triptych with St. Peter on the left and St. Paul on the right. Anchor 1 Oratory of St. Julian Artist: Antonio da Viterbo (Il Pastura) Date: 1200s • St. Peter and St. Paul are attributed to Antonio but other hands are also present. They have been repainted and are not in good condition ▶ ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ Apse Mosaic Artist: Byzantine influence of tall figures Date: 9th century • Jesus in the center gives a blessing in the Greek manner • Above Jesus, God the Father's hand holds a crown • Right of Jesus are Sts. Peter, Valerian, and Agatha • Left of Jesus are Sts. Paul, Cecilia, and Pope Paschal. The square halo of Paschal indictates he was still alive. He is holding a model of this church • A pheonix, indicating the resurrection, sits on one of the palm trees • Twelve lambs depart Jerusalem and Bethlehem towards the Lamb of God Inscription recalls Paschal's building of the Church and placing the sarcophagi in the crypt
