Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ Papal Altar Artist: Giovanni di Stefano Date: 1367 ca; 1846-1878 • There is a story that the upper part of this altar is a wood altar that was used by St. Peter and the early popes • The white marble altar was the gift of Pope Urban V (1362-1370) and thus has his coat of arms in the center. It was later refinished by Pope Pius IX (1846-1878)

Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ ▶ St. Andrew Artist: Francois Duquesnoy Date: 1633-1639 • The statue is St. Andrew. St. Andrew, the apostle of Jesus, is here receiving the cross he will be martyred on • Each of the four piers are dedicated to an important relic that is housed in the balcony area above each statue. The statues are all 16 feet 6 inches high. The relic for this pier is the head of St. Andrew. The head was given to Pope Pius II (1448-1464) by Thomas Paleologos in 1462. However, Pope Paul VI (1963-1978) returned it to the Greek Church in 1964

Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb of Cardinal Consalvo Rodriguez Date: 1299 ca. • The mosaic is Virgin and Child with St Matthew and St Jerome • Mary with the child Jesus is in the center. Cardinal Rodriguez can be found as the small figure in the mosaic . St. Matthew and St. Jerome are present because their relics were brought from the East sometime before 1300 and placed in this church. St Matthew's relics are in the main altar. St. Jerome's relics may be in the Sistine chapel

Anchor 1 ▼ ▶ ◀ Gabrielli Chapel • This chapel was originally constructed in the 1400s by Falco Sinibaldi. It was later given to the Gabrielli family in 1548 and probably dedicated to Jesus. Later in the 1690s the chapel was rededicated to St. Peter the Martyr
