He died in 1537 • Maura, the sister of Bishop Gregorio, was the first abbess of the convent and is buried at the base of his tomb • The tomb shows Bishop Gregorio with the figures of Faith on the left and Justice on the right

Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb of Pius VII Artist: Bertel Thorvaldsen • The monument, in the center, has Pius VII (1800-1823) offering a blessing. The left statue is Fortitude and the right statue is Wisdom • Thorvaldsen's figures seem stiff in contrast with the baroque surroundings. Thorvaldsen's work is the only non-Catholic art found in this church

Fontana (design); Sormani (Religion on left, Pope, Justice on right) Date: 1574 • When the remains of Pope Nicholas IV were found near the main altar in 1572 this monument was created for him. It was originally located near the main altar but later moved here in 1746 by Fuga ▶

Anchor 1 ▶ ◀ St. Catherine of Siena's Room • Around 1630, Cardinal Antonio Barberini (1569-1646) had Andrea Sacchi renovate this space. This also involved moving here the room where St. Catherine of Siena died (April 29, 1380) from nearby Via. S. Chiara 14 • The body of St. Catherine of Siena is in a tomb under the main altar in this church • Although a lay woman (third order of St. Dominic) from a large poor family and illiterate for most of her life, St. Catherine (1347-1380) played a major role in the politics of her age. She encouraged the last Avignon Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome which he soon did. Later, during the Western Schism, Pope Urban VI invited her to Rome to enlist her aid ▼

Anchor 1 ▶ ◀ Tomb of Innocent VIII Artist: Antonio del Pollaiolo Date: 1498 • Above, Pope Innocent VIII (1484-1492) has in his left hand a piece of Longinus's lance. Longinus is the traditional name of the soldier, from John 19:34, that pierces the side of Jesus on the cross. Sultan Bajazet II gave this to Innocent VIII in 1489. The four panels around the Pope indicate the four cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude. Below, Innocent VIII sleeps awaiting the resurrection • This is the only tomb that was present in the old St. Peter's church that is present in the new
