He died in 1537 • Maura, the sister of Bishop Gregorio, was the first abbess of the convent and is buried at the base of his tomb • The tomb shows Bishop Gregorio with the figures of Faith on the left and Justice on the right

The left statue is Fortitude and the right statue is Wisdom • Thorvaldsen's figures seem stiff in contrast with the baroque surroundings. Thorvaldsen's work is the only non-Catholic art found in this church

Anchor 1 Arch Mosaic Artist: Pietro Cavallini Date: 1316-1334 • Before the fire, this arch mosaic was originally on the church's facade • The mosaic has Mary and the Child Jesus. To the right of Mary is an angel which is the symbol of the evangelist Matthew. The symbol of John is on the other side of this arch. The symbols of the other two evangelists, Luke and Mark, are on the back side of the triumphal arch ▶ ◀ ▼

Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ ▶ ◀ Chapel of St. Ignatius of Loyola Artist: Etienne Monnot • The marble angels above the painting are by Monnot Artist: Pierre Le Gros and Federico Ludovici (1st); Adamo Tadolini and Antonio Canova (2nd; 1804) • In place of the painting, there previously was a statue of St. Ignatius made mainly of silver. When the French took over Rome in 1798 parts of it were melted down to pay reparations. Later a second statue was cast using stucco covered in silver
