Currently the last on the list of 148 popes is Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) • Pope Pius VI (1775-1799) built the sacristy in 1776-1784. It is a separate building that is attached to St. Peter's by walkways. The sacristy proper, where vesting for Mass occurs, is not open to visitors. The writing on the slab reads PAULO APOSTOLOMART and is from the 4th century • The slab had three openings so that incense could be placed inside on St. Paul's feast day and pilgrims could touch objects against his relics. A copy is in the museum
