Anchor 1 ▼ Sacristy and Treasury • This is a list in marble of all the popes that are buried in St. Peter's. Currently the last on the list of 148 popes is Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) • Pope Pius VI (1775-1799) built the sacristy in 1776-1784. It is a separate building that is attached to St. Peter's by walkways. The sacristy proper, where vesting for Mass occurs, is not open to visitors. The treasury, similar to a museum, has various artwork and can be visited

Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb Artist: Unknown Date: 0-100 • After the fire, excavations revealed a 1st-2nd century tomb below the altar. The writing on the slab reads PAULO APOSTOLOMART and is from the 4th century • The slab had three openings so that incense could be placed inside on St. Paul's feast day and pilgrims could touch objects against his relics. A copy is in the museum
