Anchor 1 ▼ Gregorian Room • Almost all of the original apse mosaic of 1220, in the main church, has been removed due to the 1747 renovation and later fire. Parts of the original work can be found in this room • There are also many fragments from the basilica before the fire • The side entrance here connects with the Ostian Way. Although this is convenient, the best experience is to enter through the atrium ▲ ▶ ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ Chapel of the Relics of the Passion • From left, these relics are the finger bone of St. Thomas, fragments (Holy Sepulcher, column of flagellation, Bethlehem cave), and two thorns from the crown of thorns • The index finger of St. Thomas was given to this church by St. Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373) • The fragments were added by Abbot Benigni in 1825 • The thorns measure 3.5 cm and 3.4 cm ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ Chapel of the Relics • The benefactor for the chapel, built in 1625, was the duke of Bavaria Maximilian I (1597-1651) • On the bottom left is a relic of an arrow that wounded St. Sebastian • On the bottom right is the column to which St. Sebastian was tied • At the bottom center is the supposed imprints of Jesus' feet from the "Domine, quo vadis?" post-gospel story. As Peter was leaving Rome in order to avoid being killed, Jesus appeared on the road. Peter asked him "Lord, where are you going?" to which Jesus replied, "I go to be crucified a second time." Peter then returned to Rome. The location where this is to have taken place is about a mile north from here at the Quo Vadis church

He is connected here with a spear which is interesting because the typical symbol of his martyrdom is an axe. . • All of the statues in the pillars are of the 12 apostles of Jesus (except St. Paul). These 12 pillars follow Revelation 21:14 which speak of the 12 apostles as the 12 foundations of the new Jerusalem • The dove in the pediment is the heraldic device of the Pamphili. Pope Innocent X (1644-1655), a Pamphili, renovated the nave

The baldachin itself survived the fire but the columns are new • The Benedictine abbot Bartholomew who commissioned this work is represented in one of the corner statues and on the front panel • The balustrade, leading to St. Paul's tomb below, was created for the 1575 Jubilee
