Anchor 1 ▼ Gregorian Room • Almost all of the original apse mosaic of 1220, in the main church, has been removed due to the 1747 renovation and later fire. Parts of the original work can be found in this room • There are also many fragments from the basilica before the fire • The side entrance here connects with the Ostian Way. Although this is convenient, the best experience is to enter through the atrium ▲ ▶ ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ Chapel of the Pieta Artist: Giovanni Lanfranco • The fresco is Triumph of the Cross. This is the only remaining fresco in all of St. Peters • The theme of the cross is because, before the pieta statue was placed here, there was a wooden crucifix in this chapel which was attributed to Pietro Cavallini. This crucifix is now located in the small chapel just to the left under the Monument of Leo XII ▲

Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb of Pope Leo XIII Artist: Giulio Tadolini Date: 1907 • The monument is Tomb of Pope Leo XIII (1878-1893). The statue on the left of a Laborer refers to his encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891) which began modern Catholic Social Teaching. The statue on the right is Religion • The door below leads to the sacristy. In the passageway are the tombs of Cavalier d'Arpino (1568-1640) and Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661)

Anchor 1 S. Maria Maggiore • S. Maria Maggiore is a classic example of the basilica in Rome. There is a nave with two parallel aisles on each side. Of the 40 columns, 4 are granite and 36 are bianco greco marble • The cosmatesque floor is from Pope Eugenius III (1145-1153) ▲ ▶ ◀ ▼

Maria ad Martyres (Pantheon) Agrippa temple to all the gods: 27BC Hadrian rebuild: 117-138 Boniface IV consecrates as Church: 609 • Hadrian's Latin inscription says Marcus Agrippa built this during his third term as consul • The 16 granite columns are about 42 feet high and 15 feet around. Popes Urban VIII and Alexander VII (1655-1667) replaced the three on the left • The walls have brick from 115-124 which would have been covered with marble • The niches on each side of the main door had large statues of Agrippa, on the left, and Augustus, on the right ▶ ◀
