Parts of the original work can be found in this room • There are also many fragments from the basilica before the fire • The side entrance here connects with the Ostian Way. This is the only remaining fresco in all of St. Peters • The theme of the cross is because, before the pieta statue was placed here, there was a wooden crucifix in this chapel which was attributed to Pietro Cavallini. This crucifix is now located in the small chapel just to the left under the Monument of Leo XII ▲

The statue on the left of a Laborer refers to his encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891) which began modern Catholic Social Teaching. The statue on the right is Religion • The door below leads to the sacristy. In the passageway are the tombs of Cavalier d'Arpino (1568-1640) and Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661)
