Anchor 1 ▼ Gregorian Room • Almost all of the original apse mosaic of 1220, in the main church, has been removed due to the 1747 renovation and later fire. Parts of the original work can be found in this room • There are also many fragments from the basilica before the fire • The side entrance here connects with the Ostian Way. Although this is convenient, the best experience is to enter through the atrium ▲ ▶ ◀

Anchor 1 ▼ Chapel of the Pieta Artist: Giovanni Lanfranco • The fresco is Triumph of the Cross. This is the only remaining fresco in all of St. Peters • The theme of the cross is because, before the pieta statue was placed here, there was a wooden crucifix in this chapel which was attributed to Pietro Cavallini. This crucifix is now located in the small chapel just to the left under the Monument of Leo XII ▲

Anchor 1 ▼ Tomb of Pope Leo XIII Artist: Giulio Tadolini Date: 1907 • The monument is Tomb of Pope Leo XIII (1878-1893). The statue on the left of a Laborer refers to his encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891) which began modern Catholic Social Teaching. The statue on the right is Religion • The door below leads to the sacristy. In the passageway are the tombs of Cavalier d'Arpino (1568-1640) and Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661)

Anchor 1 ▼ Vestibule Artist: Isaia da Pisa Date: 1455 • The tomb is Funeral Monument of Beato Angelico • Fra Angelico (1387-1455), a Dominican, was one of the great masters of medieval art. He died in the adjoining monastery February 18, 1455 • The Virgin and Child in the Frangipane Chapel is attributed to him and a modern copy of his St. Dominic is found in the Chapel of St. Dominic ◀ ▶

Anchor 1 Apse Mosaic Artist: Iacopo Torriti Date: 1295 • There are five mosaics of Mary below the apse. The four visible here are, from left: Nativity, Dormition of the Virgin, Adoration of the Magi, and Presentation • The Dormition in the center connects with the apse above in that, after Mary's earthly life, she was crowned in heaven. Here Jesus holds Mary's soul Artist: Francesco Mancini Date: 1750 • The painting is Nativity Artist: Mino del Reame Date: 1474 ca. • The reliefs, from left: Nativity, Liberius Outlines the Basilica in the Snow, Assumption, and Adoration of the Magi. Anchor 1 ▼ ◀ Constantine Artist: Bernini Date: 1654-1670 • The statue is Constantine. Constantine (306-337) was the Emperor of Rome who legalized Christianity in 313. The statue shows his conversion moment when he sees a cross in the sky and hears a divine voice saying "You will conquer in this sign" • The niche statues are faith, hope, charity, and the Church (none are pictured)

Anchor 1 ▼ ▲ St. Benedict • St. Benedict lived from 480-546 • Below the statue is an inscription with the names of those clergy present during the proclamation of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) on December 8, 1854. There are two other inscriptions which also contain names with the final one recording the event itself
